You work late nights just to keep on the lights.

Mommy got me training wheels so I could keep on my bike.

And you never put no man over me.

And I love you for that mommy!!

I hope I made you proud.

Interlude

“We’re halfway through the book and by now it will be obvious that I didn’t have a typical childhood. Quite the opposite. It felt like I was lost in a jungle and having to find my way out. I’ve tried to learn from everything that I’ve experienced along the way; a process of trial and error. Now I realise that personal development is ongoing and it’s a process that never ends. I’m doing well financially and in sporting terms, but that’s just part of the story. These days especially, famous people present an image of having perfect lives. I’m aware that I contribute to that too. On social media everyone can see how luxurious our lives are, how big our cars are, how packed the stadiums we play in. That’s one side of the story. People never see the flaws, the things that go wrong, our weaknesses and failings. I discuss them with the people who are close to me, but I don’t talk about them in public. That’s why I was so keen to write this book – to let everyone know the road I’ve had to travel to get here. The mistakes I’ve made, and how I’ve dealt with them. I’m not perfect. No one is.

In particular, I’d like to ask the young people who read this, to take a good look in the mirror and ask themselves the same question that I asked myself. The conditions I’m creating in my life, are they good for me? The choices you make, the goals you pursue, the friends you hang out with: are these the people who inspire you, or are they the type who think it’s cool to hang out on the sofa with drinks and drugs until six o’clock in the morning? Are expensive brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Louboutin really the marks of a successful life? Don’t you think that it’s much more about being happy with yourself? About knowing who you are, what you stand for and where you want to go? Then good things will come your way.

A lot of young people are chasing after the same ideal, the perfect image: a Rolex and a gold chain. That’s the image of success and that was exactly how I saw it when I was younger. But material success in itself shouldn’t be the goal. It’s great to be able to buy nice things when it’s the result of hard work; buying your first Rolex is a moment you’ll never forget then, because it’s a reward for what you’ve done. But personally, I wasted too much time doing things in the wrong order, focusing on material things I wanted to use to radiate success. It’s only now that I have a different outlook on life that I’m really able to enjoy it.
